What’s Your Farm’s Natural Capacity?

Tim ThompsonUncategorizedLeave a Comment

Bonnie from Perth nrm is conducting natural capacity account audits on farms to measure the long-term impacts of regenerative practices and improve the condition of the natural capital. By putting a value on these things beyond the farm gate, farmers can see the impact of their practices on productivity and profitability, as well as the environmental performance of their farms. The social and community benefits of these practices, such as providing habitat for native species, are also taken into account. The project involves collecting around 40 different data points on each property and building up a library of information about the properties through ground-truthing radar images. While farmers already have a good idea of the benefits of natural assets on their farms, the project provides incentives for farmers to get involved by measuring and valuing these benefits beyond their own knowledge.
