Farm Firefighting Unit: What It Really Needs

A farm firefighting unit is only useful if it starts, carries enough water and survives rough paddock work.
Chris and Michael from Creightons Creek CFA explain what a reliable rural fire unit really needs—and the weaknesses that can leave landholders exposed.

Following the January 2026 Longwood fire, I visited Creightons Creek in Victoria to examine the equipment, preparation and community systems that supported the local firefighting response.

Private farm firefighting units played an important supporting role while CFA appliances returned to refill. The Creightons Creek community also developed a high-capacity quick-fill trailer capable of filling a fire truck in under three minutes, reducing turnaround time and avoiding difficult access to dams, creeks and other water sources.

We then examine what makes a practical farm fire unit fit for purpose, including:

• Suitable water capacity
• A reliable pump and motor
• Durable hose with useful reach
• Fresh fuel and regular pump testing
• A recirculation system to protect the pump
• A properly constructed, braked trailer
• Strong axles and chassis for rough paddock conditions
• Training and an understanding of fire behaviour

A water tank and pump strapped to an old trailer do not automatically make a safe firefighting unit. The complete system must be strong enough for the load, maintained throughout fire season and operated by people who understand its limitations.
